Lesson 4 : ការសួរសុខទុក្ខគ្នា (Greeting in Khmer Language)

 Sursdei! 

The alphabet lessons probably was hard! let's take our mind off a bit and learn some basic greeting in Khmer Language.

Let's start!

A: ជំរាបសួរ! = Hello

B: ជំរាបសួរ! តើអ្នកសុខសប្បាយទេ? = Hello! How are you?

A: បាទ! សុខសប្បាយ! ចុះអ្នកវិញ? = I'm fine! What about you?

B: ចាស សុខដូចគ្នា :) = Yes, im fine too.

Do you recognize the alphabet in above sentences? Let's analyze what are those words mean.

• [JUM-REAB-SUR] ជំរាបសួរ = Hello (Formal/Standard form)
• [TER] តើ​ = a prefix question particle *(will cover in next lesson)
• [NAK] អ្នក = YOU 
• [SOK-SABBAY] សុខសប្បាយ​​ = FINE, Doing Fine 

*The word "សុខ" means doing well, peace, and Remember the word "សប្បាយ" ? it meant Happy. put them together សុខសប្បាយ basically mean "doing fine" 

• [TE] ទេ = suffix question particle

*By putting "ទេ" at the end of "សុខសប្បាយ" you will create a question form of "are you doing well?" or "How are you?"

• [BAAT/JAAS] បាទ/ចាស  = YES. បាទ for men, ចាស for women.
• [JOS-NAK-VINH] ចុះអ្នកវិញ? = HOW ABOUT YOU?
• [DOCH-KNEA] ដូចគ្នា = SAME TO YOU, AS WELL
